Fifteen anglers fishing aboard Mike Lackey's Vagabond arrived at Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 27, after a ten-day San Diego Anglers trip to the southern banks.
"The big ones are starting to show up," remarked Lackey at the scales.
During the trip there was a crew contest for yellowtail. "The fish caught will be donated to the Potrero California dept. of Forestry members, who are still fighting the fires," said Jeff Steinhoff of Comfort Inn, who was handling the transfer.
Pat Bowler of San Diego won first place for a 146.2-pound tuna he bagged with a sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook tied to 50-pound Ande line and 65-pound Power Pro Spectra on an Avet HX 5/2 reel and a Calstar seven-foot rod.
"He fought like the devil, for 45 minutes," said Bowler. "He was a mean fish, he didn't come easy. I credit the crew for helping me get him on the boat."
The jackpot was split by species. Mike Ornelas of El Cajon won second place, for a 42.5-pound wahoo he got with a blue and silver Burns Bomb.
Dylan Palmer of Santee won third place for a 29-pound yellowtail.
