Mike Lackey docked his Vagabond July 1 after a three-day trip with 21 anglers, who quit fishing at five p.m. the previous day because they were limited out. That gives Mike the first limit catch of albacore for a long range boat this season.
"We got three bluefin," he said at the Point Loma Sportfishing scales, but we saw more of ???em. There were lots of small spots. It looks good.
"Most of our albacore were on bait," he added, "but we got plenty while trolling. I thought the small jetheads were working well, with green and yellow and black and purple the best color combos."
Felisa Clair of Natoma, KS fished on the trip with her hubby. She's 70, and husband Bill is 79.
"It was my first time albacore fishing," she said. "I had a great time, and once I got one on the troll and then got another right away on bait!"
She posed for a picture, and Bill Clair said he fished albacore the first time in 1970, "?Ķwhen I was a young man."
Richard Romo of Long Beach won first place for a 57-pound bluefin, also taking over first place for the best of the species so far this season.
"It was a war," he said. "He took me around the boat eight times. He bit, and before I knew it, he was miles away, with all my line."
Richard Goka of Fresno won second place, and took over first place for the best albie so far on a long ranger. His fish weighed 33.2 pounds.
Paul Kouzelman of Lancaster won third place for a 32.6-pound longfin.
